On July 1st, I got the keys to my new office. In six weeks, it had gone from this...
...to this:
I thought we'd check out what it looks like today!
The furniture is a mis-matched mixture of stuff I brought over from our house and things from Ronnie's last office and his old apartment - all I bought new was the cheapest desk they had at IKEA. I still haven't gotten around to hang the mirror, the giant picture of Manhattan and all of my posters up on the walls, and you can't exactly accuse it of being too cozy, but I love it. Every time I sit down at that desk, I get things done. Without anxiety, without pressure, without sweaty palms or a racing heart.
The rent is too expensive, considering what I earn at the moment, but I've chosen to deal with that. It's an investment in myself: in my future career as well as in my mental and physical health. It's a reason to leave the house, and it gives me a much needed taste of what my life can - and will - be like the day that I'm strong enough to have normal work days, a pace more suited to the rest of the world. It makes me hope and strive for a time when I won't lay awake all night gasping for air, when headaches will be the exception instead of the norm, when I won't be paralyzed by grief, depression and despair. When I won't constantly be so tired that it feels like I'm sleepwalking through life. A time when I'll be well.
I can't wait to get there.
Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteOMG can i LIVE there please?! that is such a cosy office
/Frida
ReplyDeleteAnnika this is amazing! No wonder you get things done in this space of your own. Is it writing that is your "work" so to speak, what creativity is happening between these walls?
ReplyDeleteSelina, absolutely - as long as you pay half the rent and don't mind me working up at the loft! ;)
ReplyDeleteFrida, varmt tack. Du är klok och dina ord betyder mycket. <3
Misha, I'm so glad you like it! Yes, writing is my only profession, the only thing I've ever been any good at. But right now I'm mostly focusing on my own writing projects, not so much on making money.
you write so amazingly. your words truly speak to me, and when I read what you're saying, I feel all your pain, and all your hope. please tell me that when you finish this novel of yours, you'll have it printed in English too?
ReplyDeleteI'm so scared of pursuing a career that involves writing/journalism because it's not a career that is definite. but you're reminding me that if there's a will, there's a way.
Your office is absolutely wonderful. Money is a necessary evil unfortunately, but the words you write are worth the investment.
ReplyDeleteLong time reader, first time commenting (I think).
Thats such a warm and cozy office!!I'm studying to become a Chartered Accountant, and although I'll be able to see the insides of only regular offices ( and maybe have one of them regulars myself), I wish I could really , have one like yours!!

I giggled when I saw we had the same laptop :) And I love what you did! Like, when I was staring at the before pictures I couldn't possibly imagine how to make it look more homey, but what you did is amazing! :)
ReplyDeletemismatched?! It looks prefectly matched straight from an interior decorating magazine! Super cosy.
ReplyDeletewow, Annika, I really love the way how you've furnished it!!! Really cozy but not too much! I really hope you'll find the perfect milieu for your projects here! Fingers crossed, keep us updated!!
ReplyDeleteI love love love your office!!! If I worked in the office like that I wouldn't be able to concentrate on actual work, I would be running around gushing and touching everything and just enjoying myself)))) so stylish!
ReplyDeleteSå himla vackert. Skulle kunna bo i soffhörnan ^^
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear that you haven't been feeling fully well to tackle daily work. I know exactly how you feel. I got a debilitating illness while I was living overseas a few years back and I'm still recovering. My stamina isn't what it used to be. So as someone who can't run more than a few errands, work but a few days, or do many social activities, do rest! Your post yesterday was the perfect thing today. Right now the world is running at too fast of a pace. Don't pay attention to what it or anyone else says about always being on the go, always working, or always being connected (though I marvel how you can find time to write a blog every day!). The most important thing is your health and well being.
ReplyDeleteLovely job on the loft, btw! :)

ReplyDeleteWhat an inspiring place to work in!
ReplyDeleteAnd you will get through the difficult times, just don't be too hard on yourself. Sometimes you will need to take small steps and some days you might even take a step backwards, but you will get there in the end.

ReplyDelete& you will get there. to that place that has been faintly out of your grasp. for you get glimpses, & you know it's there, that light. for i believe in hope, even if it feels like a drug i'm addicted to. sometimes, it's the only thing that keeps me alive.
