Midsummer Frenzy!

For all of you who've never celebrated a Swedish Midsummer - well, this is pretty much what it's like!

No Midsummer celebration is complete without some lovely old men playing instruments. The accordion (in the middle) is my favorite.

You definitely need music, because with no music, dancing around the maypole just ain't the same.

Typical Midsummer accessory: flowers in the hair. All the little ones always look like princes and princesses.

Another typical Midsummer accessory: a kid with flowers in the hair.

Apparently, the don't celebrate Midsummer in Colombia. My boyfriend's brother showed his girlfriend how to fit in perfectly. Step one: dancing! That, they do i Colombia.

Diana seemed to have a good time. Here, she's showing her boyfriend something on her phone. Why? I have no idea. I was busy taking photos.

My Midsummer crew!

When the whole maypole business got a little old, we went back to the house and had so much delicious food that I had to go upstairs and pass out for two hours afterwards before I was fit for another round. I know, I'm getting old. But hey! Then more people came by and we celebrated Midsummer for two more days, and I didn't fall asleep once! (...except at night. But come on, that doesn't count.)

  1. We have a Midsummer tradition in Estonia, but it consists of making a bonfire, grilling meat and jumping over that fire. Somethimes there are big bonfires for the whole village with a band and everything, but my family usually has a private one with close friends.
Just.. thought that I could share :)

  4. O gosh, this looks so unbelievably cute and cosy! I'm originally from Lithuania, so my friends and family do celebrate Midsummer there as well; in broad terms I guess it's the same as in Scandinavia: music, flowers, food (the first strawberries! yum!), the people you love, dancing. But now that I live in Holland I kind of let that tradition go, as no-one celebrates it here. It's quite a shame, as it's such a nice way to honor nature, the seasons and togetherness. I think especially in the past people really valued happenings like this as it connected the community and brought people closer to the everchanging cycle of nature. Sometimes I really think that life "back in the days" used to be way nicer than it is now: in this century, everything's so fast, distant and individualized. It's like people lose touch with what really matters in life. But, there's a positive aspect of course: Internet and the opportunity for blogging, hurray! (seriously, I'm getting sooo addicted to your blog, it's not even funny :o)

PS. Your house truly looks like a 'home' in the most lovely sense of the word: a peaceful, beautiful place for contemplating, eating, reading and all the stuff human beings do! It must be marvellous waking up and going to bed with the knowledge that you're surrounded by such beautiful nature. Waaahhh!

  7. That looks like so much fun! It reminds me of the German-American picnics I used to go to with my grandparents. And I'm a sucker for accordion music.

  12. So that's what happens in Midsummer! I must visit Sweden in the future to see/celebrate this festival.
My summer is in March until June and i don't think there are much festivals here. But, usually people in my school go to the pool (nope, no lakes here) or some place and just hang out. Or party (and partyin' yeah!) until they get pissed drunk or do unspeakable things.
When I saw the photo with the teenagers, I immediately thought: PLANKING! Haha!

  15. hey!So nice the midsummer! and flower crowns are really adorable.I'm from Portugal (currently living in US) and our midsummer we celebrate the Saints João,António and Pedro :) it's a tradition to have a vase with bush basil decorated with a small poem. The party consists in popular music, fireworks, and people usually eat sardines and boiled potatoes together with red wine. =)
